VSR Murthy , PTM, TM

Inspector General VSR Murthy joined the Indian Coast Guard on 18 Jan 1984. A gold medalist of the Andhra University, the officer holds Master degrees in Marine Sciences from Andhra University and Defence & Strategic Studies from Madras University. The officer also holds Master of Philosophy and a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management from the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

 

        Topper of the Coast Guard’s fifth batch of officers, Inspector General Murthy has held various important command and staff appointments, both afloat and ashore.  His command of all four major ship classes of the Indian Coast Guard with distinction includes that of the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel Samar (Awarded Best Coast Guard Unit), Offshore Patrol Vessel Vijaya (Best Search & Rescue Ship), Fast Patrol Vessel Annie Besant and Inshore Patrol Vessel Kittur Chennamma (Best Taut Ship). The officer’s important command appointments ashore include the Commander Coast Guard District-5 (Tamil Nadu), Commander Coast Guard Goa Area and Commanding Officer, ICGS Delhi.  His key staff assignments include Principal Director (Policy & Plans) and Joint Director (Human Resource Development) at the Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi and Chief Staff Officer (Personnel & Administration) at the Coast Guard Regional (West), Mumbai.

 

On elevation to the Flag rank in Aug 2009, Inspector General Murthy spear headed the Operations division at the Coast Guard Headquarters as the Deputy Director General (Operations & Coastal Security) till Jan 2012. The officer assumed duties of the Commander Coast Guard Region (A & N) on 09 Feb 2012.

 

          The Flag Officer is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has also received specialised training in Search & Rescue and Port Operations at the US Coast Guard Reserve Training Centre, Yorktown, Virginia.

 

          Inspector General Murthy is a highly decorated officer.  He is a recipient of President Tatrakshak Medal (Distinguished Service) in 2012, Tatrakshak Medal (Gallantry) in 2003 and the Lieutenant Governor (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) Commendation in 1989, and was twice awarded the Director General Indian Coast Guard Commendation in 1988 & 2006.

 

          The Flag Officer is happily married to Jyoti since 1988.  Their son Master Nikhil Kumar is aged 11 years.
