1.       At an impressive ceremony on 28 May 2011, the Hon'ble Raksha Mantri, in the presence of Shri PK Kunhalikkutty, Industries Minister of Kerala, Shri Elamaram Kareem, Former Industries Minister of Kerala and Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, AVSM, Director General Indian Coast Guard laid the foundation stone of the Indian Coast Guard Academy at Azhikkal. In addition, the ceremony was also attended by representative of various Central/State Government bodies.  

 2.        In response to the enhanced role that has been assigned to the Coast Guard, the service is pursuing urgent enhancement of its surveillance capabilities, so as to meet its tasks and responsibilities effectively. The present force-levels and manpower are slated to be doubled in a few years by graduated procurement, with proportionate and corresponding infrastructure development and augmentation of trained manpower.   .

 3.       The ab-initio training for Coast Guard personnel is undertaken at Naval Training Establishments. The professional training is imparted by the Coast Guard at its Training Centre in Kochi. The Indian Coast Guard Academy will cater for all Maritime specific courses for personnel of the Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Police and Members of the littoral countries on faculties like Search and Rescue, Marine Oil Spill Response, Maritime Law, Fisheries, Boarding and Rummaging. It will be the state-of-the-art infrastructure for training about 500 personnel in various faculties, to hone the professional skills of the personnel, to meet the increasing maritime challenges.
